At Global Facility Solutions (GFS), our internship program is built to benefit both our team and the next generation of engineers. For students, it’s an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, learn industry tools, and see what life as a mechanical engineer is really like. For us, it’s a chance to mentor emerging talent—and, when the fit is right, invite them back as full-time team members after graduation.
This summer, we welcomed Ben Johnson, a mechanical engineering student and Penn State lacrosse player, referred by another Exigent company. His professionalism, time management, and ability to mesh seamlessly with the team stood out immediately.
Ben contributed to a wide range of projects—performing building heating and cooling load calculations, year-long energy modeling, ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation rate calculations, and equipment trend analysis. He also compiled a database of more than 100 past projects to help with estimating, trained on AutoCAD, HAP, and Bluebeam, and joined our engineers on site visits.
“My most memorable project was my first one, 1212 NY Ave. On my second day, I walked into the mechanical room and had no idea what anything was. Looking back on that project now, with my knowledge of HVAC systems, is cool because it shows how much I’ve learned during my time here.”
That growth reinforced his passion for the field:
“My time here did interest me in pursuing a career in mechanical engineering and building design. I enjoyed the work I did and can see myself working in this field in the future.”
Thank you, Ben, for your contributions, professionalism, and energy this summer. We’re proud to play a part in your journey—and excited to see where it takes you.
